Hemos pasado los últimos meses en RIP entrenando fuerte en el perreo, así que fue inspirador filmar y entrevisar a Majo Espinosa y Pao Cerecedo, las creadoras de la escuela de baile de México llamada Booty Jam. Las dos enseñan rutinas de dancehall y reggaeton super sensuales y exigentes a clases que pueden llegar a tener hasta 100 personas (la mayoría mujeres, pero recientemente han dejado entrar hombres también.) Hay algunas clases de Booty Jam en que todos llevan tacones, listos para el antro. En ediciones especiales de “neon”, las estudiantes aprenden debajo de luces ultravioletas. Espinosa y Cerecedo son conocidas entre los fanes de reggaeton de DF porque han sido invitadas a bailar en conciertos con Flo Rida, J. Balvin, Ñnego Flow, Pablito Mix y otros músicos. Equipo RIP habló con Booty Jam sobre como han mezclado encanto sexual y salud física para crear su imperio, y como tratar con tu novio cuando se pone celoso sobre ese culo.

We’ve spent the last months at RIP in heavy twerk training #lasmasperras, so it was inspirational to shoot and interview Majo Espinosa and Pao Cerecedo, the creators of Mexico City dance school Booty Jam. The two teach super sensual, physically demanding dancehall and reggaeton routines to classes of up to 100 people (mainly women, but they’ve recently started selectively allowing men to participate as well.) There are some Booty Jam classes where everyone wears club-ready high heels. In special “neon” editions, students learn moves under black light. Espinosa and Cerecedo are familiar to DF reggaeton audiences because they’ve been invited to dance with Flo Rida, J. Balvin, Ñnego Flow, Pablito Mix and other artists. Team RIP talked to Booty Jam about how they’ve blended sex appeal and physical fitness to build their empire, and how to handle your boyfriend when he gets jealous about that ass.

Podemos imaginar que sus clases de tres horas son muy buenas como ejercicio fïsico. Pero más que mejores nalgas, que buscan las estudiantes que vienen a Booty Jam? We imagine that your three-hour classes are great for physical exercise. But beyond a better butt, what are students looking for from Booty Jam?

Asi es, nuestras clases generalmente tienen una duración de tres horas así que el ejercicio es impresionante. Pero además de ejercitarse y quemar calorías, nuestras alumnas buscan un espacio en el cual divertirse, hacer amistades y relajarse. Booty Jam es una fiesta. That’s right, our classes generally last three hours, so the exercise is impressive. But in addition to exercising and burning calories, our students are looking for a space where they can have fun, make friends and relax. Booty Jam is a party.

Que sientes y piensas cuando bailas reggaeton? What do you feel and think about when you’re dancing to reggaeton?

El reggaeton es uno de los géneros que involucra el concepto Booty Jam. Deja relucir nuestras raíces latinas, es algo que nos da autenticidad. Reggaeton is one of the genres that the concept of Booty Jam is most involved with. It lets our Latin roots shine, it’s something that gives us authenticity. 

¿Las clases son de puras mujeres? Porque creen que es importante tener este tipo de ambiente enfocado en las mujeres, lo cual es muy diferente a lo de los clubes típicos donde se bailan reggaeton y dancehall? Are your classes only for women? Why do you think that it’s important to have this kind of female focused atmosphere, which is so different from typical clubs where you dance to reggaeton and dancehall.

Las clases están diseñadas para mujeres debido al tipo de movimientos que hacemos y enseñamos. Sin embargo en las últimas clases le hemos abierto las puertas a ciertos hombres y nos ha dado buenos resultados. Creemos que es importante el desarrollarse en este tipo de lugares, más que un perreo o en un antro es un lugar en donde obtienen entrenamiento tanto en dancehall, reggaeton y hip hop — con mucha disciplina. The classes are designed for women because of the kind of movement we do and teach. Nonetheless in the most recent classes we’ve opened the doors to certain men and seen great results. We think it’s important to develop these kinds of places that go beyond a perreo or nightclub, it’s a space in which you can get training in dancehall, reggaeton and hip-hop dancing — with a lot of discipline.

Cuando vino TV Azteca a su clase, una de las estudiantes dijo que su novio era escandalizado por su participación en clases de Booty Jam. Creo que es un problema muy común que tienen las mujeres que quieren perrear pero que tienen pareja. When TV Azteca came to your class, one of the students said their boyfriend was scandalized by her participation in Booty Jam classes. I think that’s a really common problem that women have who want to dance perreo, but have a partner. 

Pues nosotras recomendamos que no se dejen llevar por las opiniones o taboos — que vengan y creen su propio criterio. No tiene nada de malo, es un espacio en donde las mujeres se divierten mientras obtienen mayor control de su cuerpo. Tratamos de siempre cuidar esa delgada línea entre lo sexy y lo vulgar. We recommend that people not get too caught up in opinions or taboos — that they come and judge by their own criteria. There’s nothing bad going on in our classes, it’s a space in which women have fun while they gain better control over their bodies. We always try to pay attention to that thin line between sexy and vulgar.
