Había una vez un reportero que le preguntó a Ivy Queen de dónde vino su título. Ella dijo que el parte Ivy sacó de su nombre natal, Ivelisse. Y Queen? “Porque necesitas un rango, bro.” Amamos a una mujer que se da una corona a sí misma, por eso y muchas más razones (como el hecho de que ella es la mujer más conocida del reggaeton) teníamos que tenerla para nuestra serie de entrevistas. Checa su nuevo album Vendetta, compuesto de cuatro albumes cada uno dedicado a diferente género: úrbano, bachata, hip-hop y salsa. Su reino es grande. Y según ella, no va a desaparecer nada pronto. Once upon a time, a reporter asked Ivy Queen where she got her title. She said the Ivy part was from her birth name, Ivelisse. And Queen? “Because you need a rank, bro.” We love a woman who gives herself a crown and for that and a lot of other reasons (like her being the most famous woman in reggaeton) we had to have her in our interview series. Check out her new project Vendetta, which is made of four albums each dedicated to a different genre: urban, bachata, hip-hop and salsa. Her queendom is large. And according to her, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

¿Como empezaste a hacer reggaeton? How did you start making reggaeton music?

Me dejé llevar por lo que sentía, mis experiencias vividas y comencé a hacer rap y ver en vivo a Vico C me motivo para dar el primer paso. La composición musical que se conoce como el sonido del reggaetón es producto de una mezcla de ritmos, rap y reggae panameño. El reggateon surge siendo parte de nuestra evolución. La historia lo dice todo. Desde los 15 años estoy cantando con mas de 20 años de carrera artística. Amo el reggaetón pero para personas que piensan que solo soy “reggaetonera” dedique mi nuevo album Vendetta. I went with what I felt, my lived experiences and I began to cleanse myself with rap. Seeing Vico C live motivated me to take the first step. The musical composition that I came to know as the reggaeton sound is the product of a mix of rhythms, like rap and Panamanian reggae. Reggaeton came out of our evolution. History says it all. I’ve been singing since I was 15 years old, an artistic career of over 20 years. I love reggaeton but for those people who think I’m only a reggaetonera, I’m dedicating my new album Vendetta.

 

¿Qué se inspira? What inspires you?

Mis fanáticos son mi oxigeno. Yo nací para esto, y en vez de inspiración lo que siento es una energía a la que yo le llamo musa, que me guía desde dentro para sacar lo mejor de mi y poder plasmarlo. My fans are my oxygen. I was born for this, and instead of inspiration what I feel is an energy that I call muse. It advises me from within until it can move outside of me. 

 

 

¿De qué se tratan tus letras? What are your lyrics about?

De la vida. Tengo una bendición que mis canciones son legados, por que de la única manera en la que el publico se siente identificado es con la realidad. Lo que he vivido. Todos hemos reído, llorado, sufrido, gozado, etc. Yo tengo la bendición de que me llegan las palabras para poder plasmarlo. About life. I’m blessed that my songs are my legacy, because the only way the public will identify with each one is through reality. We’ve all laughed, cried, suffered, enjoyed, etc. I’m blessed that the words come to me to be shared. 

 

¿Qué le dices a la gente que cree que el reggaeton es ofensivo hacia las mujeres? What do you say to people who think that reggaeton is offensive to women?

Hay algo importante que deben entender. Generalizar es una falla humana, se haga de manera consiente o inconsciente hace el mismo daño. Por que hayan nombrado a un grupo de artista bajo un género, cada artista tiene su creación y sus propósitos. Cada quien tiene su creencia. Mi enfoque es mío. Preséntale mi trabajo a alguien que nunca haya escuchado reggaetón, y veras que el género de reggaetón lo trataran y le darán el respeto que se merecen todos los géneros. Al final es música, nadie obliga a nadie a escuchar las canciones. Si te gusta la canción, escúchala. Si no, cámbiela. Es simple. No tiene que ver con que sea ofensivo o defensivo. Mujeres bailan el tema que otras mujeres los consideran ofensivos. Todo es cuestión de perspectiva y gustos. There’s something important that they should understand. Generalization is a human fallacy, doing it in a consistent or inconsistent way, it causes the same harm. Even if a group of artists have been grouped under the same genre, each artist has their own creations and goals. Each one has their own belief. My focus is me. I introduce my work to people who have never heard reggaeton, and you’ll see that they’ll deal with the genre and give it the same respect that all genres deserve. At the end it’s music, no one is required to listen to these songs. If you like the song, listen to it. If not, change it. It’s simple. It doesn’t have anything to do with being offensive or inoffensive. Some women dance to songs that other women think are offensive. 

 ¿Qué es lo mejor de ser mujer en el reggaeton? What is the best part about being a woman in reggaeton?

Yo estoy contenta de llegar a donde he llegado y convertirme en lo que me he convertido. No soy una mujer en el reggaetón, soy la Reina del Genero Urbano, es diferente. Pero no importa mi titulo, solo ser MUJER es lo mejor que me ha pasado en esta vida. I’m happy to have arrived where I have arrived and changed how I’ve changed. I’m not a woman in reggaeton, I’m the queen of the urban genre, it’s different. But my title doesn’t matter, just that I’m a WOMAN and that’s the best thing that’s happened to me in life. 

 

 

¿Te gusta perrear? ¿Perreas con personas que no sean tu pareja? Do you like to perrear? Do you perrear with people who aren’t your partner?

Jejeje … nunca pensé en ver esta pregunta y usando el termino. No sé a lo que realmente se refiere con “perrear”, pero si se refiere a bailar. Si, me gusta bailar. Hahaha … I’ve never thought about that question and used that term. I don’t really know what you’re referring to by “perrear,” but I do know you’re talking about dancing. Yes, I like to dance. 

 

¿Qué opinas sobre la prohibición de reggaeton en algunos paises? Es impresionante que ocurrió en Cuba, y han habido momentos en que ciertos grupos han logrado prohibirlo en Colombia, Guatemala, y más lugares. What do you think about the reggaeton prohibition in some countries? It’s crazy what happened in Cuba, and there have been moments in which certain groups have fought to prohibit it in Colombia, Guatemala, and other places. 

Al final, todo es energía. Esa misma energía que usaron para prohibir el reggaetón en PR, fue la que le dio la fuerza que necesitaba el género para internacionalizarse y entrar en el campo profesional. Esa prohibición se convierte en expansión. At the end of the day, it’s all energy. That same energy that they used to ban reggaeton in Puerto Rico, that was the strength that the genre needed to internationalize and enter into the professional world. 

 

¿Cual es el futuro del reggaeton? What is the future of reggaeton?

Yo no sé del futuro, pero le puedo decir que hay Ivy Queen pa’ largo. Con mi nuevo proyecto, me convertí en una mujer latina que esta haciendo HISTORIA en la industria musical mundial comandadas de hombres. Del futuro digo que Soy La Reina de la Música Urbana y seguiré haciendo música hasta la próxima vida. I don’t know about the future, but I can tell you that Ivy Queen is it for the long run. With my new project, I changed into a Latin woman who is making HISTORY in the global music industry run by men. Of the future, I say that I am the Queen of Urban Music and I’ll keep making music until the next life.
