Nowadays reggaetón is in mutation and it is always looking to the future. We had not seen people listening to it as they do now since the day it was born and we had not listened experimentation like the one we hear these days since then. Don’t go too far, here in Latin America are more people doing reggaeton and, surprisingly, in other countries seems that is happening the same thing. It is great news for those who love perreo.

It seems like the best things in the genre nowadays are crafted in Spain. In recent years, Spanish reggaeton songs sound like the ones in our region but with more ideas and tools that make it sound further. Sergi Gil is one of those producers, he is member of El Combo Perfecto and part of a group of people that are changing the way of making reggaeton in the world. We had a little chat with him about his music, his collaborations and a lot of things more that you all shouldn’t miss. Enjoy: //

El reggaetón de hoy en día se encuentra en una etapa de mutación y de miras hacia el futuro. Desde aquel momento de su auge no se veía una percepción del género como se hace hoy en día y mucho menos una exploración como de la que somos testigos ahora. No hace falta mirar tan lejos, en Latinoamérica es cada vez mayor el número de artistas que incursionan en él y, sorpresivamente, lejos del continente parece suceder lo mismo. Una agradable noticia para cualquier persona que guste del perreo.

Pareciera que la mejor manufactura hoy en día está en España. De unos años para acá en aquel país se maquila un reggaetón que se escucha como descendiente de los mejores ejercicios de nuestra zona, pero con distintos recursos que lo hacen escucharse mucho más lejano. Uno de los responsables es Sergi Gil, productor y miembro de El Combo Perfecto y parte de una estirpe que está cambiando la manera de hacer reggaetón en el mundo. Platicamos con él sobre su música, sus colaboraciones y varias cosas más que no se deben perder.

RIP: You’re one of the coolest producers in the world right now but you haven’t had enough opportunity to talk about yourself. When did you start making music? // A pesar de ser uno de los productores europeos más cool hoy en día, tienes pocas (o ninguna) oportunidades de hablar de ti, así que empecemos por lo básico. ¿Cuándo empezaste a hacer música?

Sergi Gil: First of all I want to thank Tacón De Oro for all the support and the kind words I’ve gotten from them these days. I’m proud of my music being listened in America.

My first contact with music was when I was 12 years old. My brother bought a M-Audio controller, pretty basic, and since then I started doing sets and falling in love with this world. // Antes de todo quiero agradecer a Tacón De Oro todo el apoyo y las buenas palabras que he recibido durante este tiempo, me llena de orgullo que mi música llegue al otro lado del charco.

Mi primer contacto con la música diría que fue a los 12 años cuando mi hermano compro una controladora M-Audio muy básica y a partir de ahí comencé a hacer sets e interesarme por este mundo.

How did you become a producer? // ¿Qué fue lo que te llevó a dedicarte a producir música?

Once I was in the music world I wanted people to notice me and I realized it was never gonna happen if I kept doing sets so I decided to add some personal touches to the songs I liked. Next thing I knew: I was in the production world.  // Una vez dentro del mundo de la música quise hacerme notar y me di cuenta que haciendo sets no iba a destacar, así que decidí darle mi toque a diferentes temas que me gustaban y sin darme cuenta di el paso hacia la producción.

We know your music is now full of tropical sounds but, did you start doing this music or there were more genres in the way? //Actualmente conocemos tu trabajo como perfecto maquilador de sonidos tropicales pero, ¿desde el inicio comenzaste haciendo esto o experimentaste con más géneros musicales?

I started with other music genres different from the tropical ones. It was until I met Unai when I started being influenced by the genres I do and listen to this days. //Realmente comencé con otro tipo de estilos musicales pero cuando conocí a Unai empecé a influenciarme de los géneros que a día de hoy produzco y escucho.

You are part of El Combo Perfecto with Unai Sánchez. How would you describe the project? // Sabemos que eres parte de El Combo Perfecto al lado de Unai Sánchez. ¿Cómo describirías al proyecto?

I see El Combo like a long way project that could do huge things with some enthusiasm and the correct support. That’s why we have to keep working and giving the best of us. // El Combo lo veo como un proyecto de muy largo recorrido que con ganas y con el apoyo adecuado puede llegar a hacer grandes cosas, para eso hay que seguir trabajando y dando lo mejor de nosotros.

In addition to El Combo you do a lot of stuff by yourself like those songs we’ve heard with people like Pxxr Gvng and Alex Ink. How do you do these collaborations and how do they work? // Además de pertenecer al Combo también haces muchas cosas por tu cuenta. Hemos escuchado canciones en solitario y acompañado de otras personas como la Pxxrg Gvng o Alex Ink. ¿Cómo se concretan estas colaboraciones y cómo es su funcionamiento?

Most of the success of my career and Combo’s is thanks to Pxxr Gvng. For us Fernando (Young Beef) is a father of the music world and I’m very grateful he is one. The collaborations with them were always a thing of traveling: I used to make a beat and immediately go to Barcelona to get in the studio and record the song. In the case of Alex Ink I’ve got not much to say, he is a good friend and almost a brother so one day we were like “hey, let’s do some music” and it Distinto A Él just came out. // He de decir que gran parte de los éxitos y avances tanto en mi carrera como en la de El Combo se los debemos a PXXR GVNG, para nosotros Fernando es un padre en el mundo de la música y estoy totalmente agradecido de que así sucediese. Las colaboraciones con ellos desde el principio fueron sobre ruedas, exportaba un beat y nos desplazábamos a Barcelona para entrar en el estudio y grabar. Con Alex Ink poco tengo que decir, es amigo mío de toda la vida, de la infancia y es como de mi familia así que un día dijimos de sacar algo y de ahí salió Distinto a Él.

It seems like you are hidden in Spain and you just go out to the public light when you make a song with a big person. Why’s that? You do great music by yourself. // Pareciera que te encuentras escondido en España y sobresales cada vez que estás junto a la gente indicada. ¿Por qué crees que suceda eso si haces música tan buena?

I think that if you work hard someday you’ll end getting all the good things. You have to go step by step and if we continue in this way everything will come. // Considero que si uno trabaja y apuesta por lo suyo, un día u otro acabas recibiendo todo eso que inviertes, hay que ir paso a paso y si seguimos en esta línea todo llegará.

Besides of doing music you sing too, even if the beat is not yours. How did your singer career start and how does it work? // No sólo produces música, sino que también cantas aunque tú no seas el culpable de la pista. ¿Cómo inició y cómo fu    nciona esa faceta de tu carrera?

My singer career started the day I produced this really heavy beat, I thought it could be a hit so I tried to sing it by myself. Since then I started learning about recording techniques and voice mixing. // Mi faceta como vocalista empezó cuando un día produje un beat realmente duro que, a mi parecer, podía pegar bien y pensé que podía probar a cantarlo yo mismo. A partir de ahí comencé a aprender técnicas de grabación y mezcla de voces.

There are a lot of collaborations of you in the internet, some of them with big names and some others with unknown people. Which are those producers and singers that are doing the right things in your region? // En internet se pueden escuchar colaboraciones tuyas con varias personas y las más interesantes son con ellas que también son de bajo perfil. ¿Quiénes serían esas personas ahí en tu región que deben ser descubiertas por el mundo (productores y cantantes)

I could not name people that will be a hit. I don’t really get along with much people of my region because here aren’t many people doing reggaeton. If I had to say a name that would be Shean Beats, I’ve worked with him (in Solamente ft. Tisu) and he does an extraordinary job. // No sabría decir muy bien que artistas locales pueden llegar a pegar, no tengo realmente mucha relación con gente de mi zona debido a que no hay una gran comunidad que haga reggaetón aquí en Barcelona. Si tengo que decir a un grande diría Shean Beats, he tenido oportunidad de trabajar con él (Solamente Yo ft. Tisu) y hace unos trabajos buenísimos.

The things you do contain reggaeton but also have mambo and merengue. How would you describe your music?  // Haces reggaetón de muy alto calibre, pero también te hemos escuchado cosas como el mambo o el merengue. ¿Cómo describirías tu música?     

Music for dancing with that touch of romanticism that is always in my songs. I don’t want to be labeled in one genre and surely in a future I will make different music from the one I do now. // Música para bailar, con esos toques románticos que normalmente aparecen en mis temas. No quiero que se me etiquete en un solo género, seguramente toque alguno diferente a lo que estoy acostumbrado.

We’ve listened remixes of you like the one you made of J Balvin’s Ginza. How do you choose the artists and songs for doing remixes?// También te hemos escuchado hacer remixes muy cool como aquel de “Ginza” de J Balvin. ¿Cómo eliges a los artistas y  las canciones a remixear?

I use to choose songs that are hits in the moment. I thought Ginza was a great song that could carry some of my style. I usually work over acapellas to get a cleaner sound but in that time I had to use the original one and I only made a remake to the beat so people can’t notice the change from one song to another. // Suelo elegir temas que están sonando en ese momento, Ginza me pareció un tema muy pegadizo y al que le podía añadir un poco de mi estilo. Normalmente trabajo sobre acapellas para sacar un sonido más limpio, pero en esa ocasión me tuve que conformar con el tema original y simplemente hice un remake a la pista para que no se notase el cambio entre una pista y otra.

You always say in your songs “poniendo sentimiento a la música (adding feelings to music)” and we can hear those feelings even if the song is kind of sexual. Why singing about emotions and not about partying and stuff? // Tu grito de batalla es “poniendo sentimiento a la música” y la verdad es que lo que escuchamos de ti, aunque sea sexual, siempre está llena de romanticismo. ¿Por qué elegir eso y no las letras duras de cotorreo?

I guess something inside me drives me to take those directions in the lyrics. I don’t rule out that I might do a song about malianteo but I haven’t found the right moment and the right lyrics yet. // Supongo que algo dentro de mí me lleva a tomar esa dirección en las letras, igualmente no descarto hacer algún que otro tema de un estilo más a lo malianteo, siempre me ha gustado pero no he encontrado el momento ni quizás las letras adecuadas para llevarlo a cabo.
